We all want thick, luscious, healthy hair, but sometimes we can experience symptoms of hair loss and thinning. It can be worrying when we loose our hair (currently going through this myself so I totally understand the panic!).
One reason this can happen is due to nutritional deficiencies caused by an imbalanced diet. Other reasons may include hormonal imbalances, stress and genetic disorders.
Whilst it’s better to receive our daily allowance of vitamins and minerals from the food we consume, it’s not always physically possible to intake 100% of what our body needs naturally.
Fortunately, this is an easy fix with supplements and vitamins.

Important Side Note – Collagen is VITAL (and a best kept secret!)
Collagen is an extremely important protein (hence why I haven’t included it below) which is VITAL for healthy hair growth, but after the age of 30, our production of collagen decreases rapidly!
Collagen not only keeps our hair thick and strong, but it also wards off premature grey hair by stimulating melanin production which keeps our locks colourful and radiant for longer.
Collagen is also necessary for hydrated, glowing skin, strong tendons, bones and healthy nails too!
I personally add this flavorless collagen protein powder to my morning coffee/tea. Within 4 weeks of taking this daily, I’ve noticed my previously thinning hair starting to grow back!! It has no taste so doesn’t make anything taste icky! You can check it out here.
Biotin, also known as Vitamin H, is THE vitamin for hair growth. Biotin helps to improve your body’s keratin infrastructure, which contributes to thicker and healthier hair.
You can swap your normal shampoo for Biotin infused shampoo, proven to promote thicker hair growth (plus many more benefits!)
A study done on women aged between 21-75 years with thyroid issues, alopecia or taking certain medications indicated significant amounts of hair growth after 90 days of taking a biotin supplement twice a day.
It was also noted that they had shiner, stronger hair and glowing skin.
Biotin isn’t just good for hair though, it’s also important for healthy eye, liver and nerve function.
Biotin is found in meat, dairy and poultry, grains and egg yolks naturally, but if you prefer to take a vitamin so you know that you’re getting your full daily needs, you can check out an organic, vegan certified, reputable brand here.
Zinc plays a vital part in many bodily processes and functions such as cell reproduction, hormonal balance, proper absorption of vitamins, and protein synthesis. All of which are vital for proper hair growth.
A zinc deficiency can cause excessive hair shedding because without zinc, the hair shafts become weak, causing hair breakage and very slow hair regrowth.
3. Folic Acid
Known as the holy grail of hair growth vitamins, Folic Acid is a vital mineral in healthy hair growth.
Folic Acid keeps the growth of hair in the anagen phase. The longer the anagen phase, the longer the hair, the higher the pigmentation and the greater the thickness. The shorter the anagen phase, the shorter the hair and the lower the thickness.
Selenium is often prescribed by doctors for those suffering with hair loss. And with good reason too!
Rich in antioxidant enzymes, selenium prevents damage to the hair follicles from sources such as pollution, UV rays, and other forms of free radicals.
Selenium also encourages regular hair growth by helping the body to convert necessary proteins to grow hair. It also promotes a healthy scalp due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Check it out here!
Magnesium isn’t a mineral that’s talked about a lot when it comes to hair growth, but it’s just as important as the rest of the minerals listed here.
Magnesium is responsible for over 700 metabolic functions and processes.
A magnesium deficiency causes calcium to build up around the hair follicles which can result in hair loss.
This build up can also cause premature grey hair to appear due to the decreased melanin production. Check out this vital mineral here!
